Summary
Born South Deerfield, MA; deafened at age 2 from scarlet fever. Entered the Kendall School in Washington, DC in 1865, where he first showed a talent for art, then graduated Gallaudet College in 1880. Immediately became a long-time teacher of drawing and painting in both Kendall School and Gallaudet. Honorary M.A. (1932) and honorary D.D. (1939) degrees from Gallaudet College. Founder of the Calvary Baptist Church for the Deaf in Washington, DC.
