Summary
Abandoned by his birth parents in the Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) because of his deafness. Found and adopted by missionary David Routt, who named him Martin Sexton since his original Choctaw name was unknown. Was enrolled in the Illinois Institution for the Deaf and Dumb beginning 1892.
