Summary
Born at Albany, NY and deafened by scarlet fever at age 8. Entered the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb at age 12, graduating in 1869. Appointed a teacher at that school; entered Columbia College in 1872 on a part-time basis, but had to drop out when job changes increased his teaching burden. However, Columbia College awarded him an honorary B.A. in 1892 in recogition of his continuing studies and success as a teacher. He continued at the New York school until 1883, then moved to the New Jersey School for the deaf.
