Summary
Born at Monti, UT; deafened by scarlet fever at age 5. There being no school for the deaf at that time in Utah, he grew up with virtually no education except a little arithmetic from his father, from whom he also learned carpentry. At about age 30 (1889), he was sent to the newly-established school for the deaf in Salt Lake City for 5 years, receiving a basic education plus cabinet making and mechanical drawing. In 1896, was appointed foreman of the carpentry and cabinet making shop at the Utah State School for the Deaf in Ogden.
