Summary
Age of onset of deafness uncertain, but certainly by the time he entered politics. He overcame his deafness-related speech problems by setting his mind to public speaking and succeeded, but could never participate in debates due to his deafness. Appointed a minister by Disraeli in 1858; also wrote extensively.
