Summary
Born in Ohio and lost his hearing 1873. Graduated the Ohio School for the deaf in 1880, then entered Gallaudet College. Had to leave Gallaudet during his junior year because of poor health. Spent 2 years in the West for his health, then worked in almost every post in the Durango, CO Daily Idea for a few years. Went to Mississippi in 1889 to become instructor in printing at the Mississippi School for the deaf and editor of the school newspaper; five years later, added the duties of teacher in the literary department.
