Summary
Born deaf at Flower's Cove, NL; Newfoundland School for the Deaf 1964-1971, then public schools in Flower's Cove grades 6-11. At age 16, becme seriously ill with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, delaying her schooling. Attended the Atlantic Technological Vocational Centre deaf classes for vocational training. Unable to find a regular job, she became a professional babysitter. Eventually, she earned a high-school equivalency certificate. She became a volunteer with the Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians from 1989 onward and was also active in other deaf organizations.
