Summary
Born deaf in Washington, DC; daughter of Agnes Minor Padden (q.v.) and Donald Padden. Preschool and grades 1-2 at Kendall School for the Deaf, then public schools grade 3 through high school graduation. BS from Georgetown University, 1978, and PhD from University of California, San Diego, 1983. Authority on American Sign Language and on deaf culture and deaf sociology; has written or co-authored several books and many articles. Assistant Professor of linguistics at UCSD since 1983; served on the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees 1995-2003. Married to Tom Humphries, also a deaf linguist.
