Summary
Born at Rockcorry, Ireland; hearing damaged in boyhood by a teacher's physical punishment. Emigrated to the U.S. in 1893 and lived in Chicago; invented the Gregg Shorthand system about 1888 while at Liverpool, England, and published the definitive version in Boston, MA shortly after his immigration, though he soon relocated to Chicago. Founded a school for the teaching of his shorthand system and won many awards.
