Summary
Hearing. Son of deaf teacher David Ray Tillinghast (q.v.). Taught one year in a hearing boy's prep school, then taught at the Missouri School for the Deaf 1894-1895. Taught at Washington State School for the Deaf 1895-1899, then at the Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind 1899-1901 and the Kentucky School for the Deaf 1901-1905. Superintendent of the Oregon School for the Deaf 1905-1922, of the Missouri School 1922-1925, and of the South Dakota School for the Deaf 1925 until retirement in 1939. His son Edward W. followed his father's footsteps, becoming superintendent of the Arizona School for the Deaf; daughter Hilda Tillinghast Williams taught at the Iowa School for the Deaf, was principal at Iowa School for the Deaf, and instructor at Gallaudet College and teacher in the Kendall School for the Deaf. Edward Stansbury Tillinghast died in Maryland and was buried in Washington, DC.
