Summary
Born at Louhans, Burgundy; deafened in early childhood. Student at age 8, then teacher after graduation, at the Paris Institute. Wrote numerous books and pamphlets; received the French Legion of Honor, 1849. His 1840 short history of deaf education, Les Sourds-Muets Avant et Depuis l'Abbe de l'Epee (The Deaf Before and Since the Abbe de l'Epee) is published, in English translation, in The Deaf Experience: Classics in Language and Education (1984), p.161-203.
