Summary
Late-deafened. Grew up in Ohio; after 2 years of college, joined the Army and went to Vietnam. While there, contracted malaria and became deaf at age 21 from ototoxic medication. After "rehabilitation" and discharge in 1971, entered Gallaudet College and majored in psychology. There, he met and married Sue Storts, also deaf. After graduation, worked 1 year for Project Washoe with signing chimpanzees in NV, then earned a master's in counseling at the Oregon College of Education in 1976. Worked 4 years in a WV mental health program, then to Mankato, MN where he became supervisor-coordinator for the Regional Service Center for Hearing Impaired Persons.
