              Born deaf at Bideford, North Devon; attended the Exeter Institution for the Deaf and Dumb 1827-1834, where his mathematical talents appeared and he made public exhibitions of his prowess. Became a teacher at the Manchaster Institution for the Deaf and Dumb 1836-1879. He resigned when the school became oral and became a lay missionary to the deaf. In 1892, married Louisa Williams, moving first to Macclesfield and then settling in Leicester.
