Deaf at 3 from illness; private school until age 12, when he entered the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, training as a printer. His early working years after age 17 were spotty, but he finally found a stable job in the printing department of the Bradstreet Co. (now Dun & Bradstreet).
