Deafened from spinal meningitis; attended the Alabama School for Negro Deaf, then the Michigan School for the Deaf. The second Black student to be accepted at Gallaudet College in the early 1950s, graduating 1956; M.A. (1973) from California State University, Northridge. Teacher at the Florida School for the Deaf, the Tennessee School for the Deaf, the New Jersey School for the Deaf, and the California School for the Deaf at Berkeley.
