Summary
Born in Poznan, Poland; deafened by a blow from a German soldier's rifle butt in the Lodz ghetto; was a member of an insurgent group during World War II and eventually imprisoned by the Nazis; emigrated to the U.S. in 1947. First deaf person to earn a Ph.D. in English; member of the English Department faculty, Gallaudet University, until his retirement in 1996. Author and co-editor of books and co-author of a play.
