Born deaf near Portland, Maine; student at the American School for the deaf, 1855-67; B.A. (1870) from Gallaudet; first deaf teacher at the School for the Deaf, Belleview, Ontario; the only deaf Chatauqua speaker on record; died in an ice-boating accident. One source gives his death date as February 20 rather than 17.
