One of a group of deaf people who regularly had sex "parties", Mair, after a drinking bout at a pub, became upset with one of the women who was caring for his two children, accusing her of neglecting and abusing them. A dispute ensured, and he returned to the woman's house later that night, beating her and her mother with a crowbar. The woman later died of her injuries and the mother was severely injured. Mair was tried in a case in which one deaf witness lied under oath to cover her involvement in the "parties", but she was found out. Mair was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
