              Summary
              Hearing; third president of Gallaudet College. Graduated St. Olaf College (WI) in 1922, then earned an M.A. at Gallaudet College, 1923. Served as principal of the Kendall School 1924-1925, then became assistant superintendent at the Wright Oral School, promoted to principal 1 year later. Became superintendent of the Minnesota School for the Deaf in 1932 until being chosen for president of Gallaudet College in 1945. Presided over Gallaudet's full accreditation in 1957 and established the Model Secondary School for the Deaf. Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from St. Olaf College (1946) and Gallaudet College (1952). Retired in 1969. Gallaudet University's theater building is named in his honor.
