Summary
Born at Richmond, VA; deafened in her teens from chronic illness. Sold her first manuscript for the novel The Descendant at about age 18, and turned out many more, becoming a famous author and winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1942. Her autobiography, The Woman Within (1954), contains much about her lifelong struggle with her deafness, which she never did accept. Died at Richmond, VA and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery there.
