Born at London and deafened at age 15 from a blow to the head. Trained and worked in tailoring but soon quit, going to work for a photographic supplier, first as a courier and then as a stock clerk, eventually rising to company director. Married Naomi Harrison, also deaf, in 1957. When his company was taken over by new owners, he was forced into early retirement at age 53 since they considered him too expensive as he required interpreters for meetings and conferences.
