Summary
Also known as John Gustaf Agelii. Born at Sala in Sweden; progressively deafened in middle age. Began painting without formal instruction, then went to Paris and studied art there. From 1891 to 1902, he went back and forth between Sweden and Paris several times, then lived in Egypt 1902-1909. In Egypt, he neglected art, working at various things including newspaper editor. Returned to art in 1910, and continued to shuttle among Paris, Sweden and Egypt until the latter deported him in 1916, by which time he was completely deaf. He was killed the next year when a train ran over him in Barcelona while he awaited passage on a ship to Sweden.
