Summary
Born deaf at St. John's, NL; Newfoundland School for the Deaf 1971-1985, then graduated the nursing assistant program at the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Trades and Technology in 1987. Denied proper interpreting during her certification tests, she unsuccessfully waged a 3-year battle with various provincial and national authorities before giving up for lack of funds to continue the legal battle as well as the expiration of the 3-year deadline for passing the test. An amendment to the Newfoundland Human Rights Code passed too late to help her; she had since taken a computer studies program at George Brown College and gone to work as a bank cashier from 1992 onward.
