Born in Jefferson Green County, PA; deafened at age 11; graduated the Iowa School for the deaf and Gallaudet College (1876); teacher at the Western Pennsylvania School for the deaf, 1876-1924. A noted deaf poet of his day, many of his verses were collected and published in books. Honorary M.A. (1922) from Gallaudet College.
