Summary
Born at Karlskrona near Stockholm; began losing hearing in his teens from illness. Earned a Ph.D. from the University of Uppsala, 1788. Helped introduce the modern scientific names for the chemical elements into the Swedish language; became professor of chemistry in 1794, Sweden's foremost chemist by 1796. Discovered the element tantalum. Blinded by an explosion in 1801; died at Uppsala.
