Hearing. Born at Bethlehem, CT; entered Phillips Academy in Andover, MA in 1816 and Yale College in 1818, graduating 1822; taught at the American School for the deaf, 1822-1831; superintendent of the New York School for the deaf 1831 until retirement in 1867. Author of several books on deaf education; honorary degrees from University of the State of New York (1849) and from Galladuet College (1871). Died at New York City.
