Hearing. In 1830-1831, visited the Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, and the American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb to learn methods of deaf education. In June 1831, with financial assistance from the government of Lower Canada, established the first Canadian school for the deaf in the city of Quebec. This school folded after about 5 years. Subsequently, he taught hearing pupils for a while, then was a printer, then editor of several Canadian newspapers.
