Summary
Born at Belleville, IL; meningitis caused deafness at age 2. Illinois Institution for the deaf 1877-1889. Worked at the Belleville Advocate and the News-Democrat, then switched to shoemaker in various shoe factories and shoe shops before opening a shoe repair shop of his own in 1897 in Belleville.
