Thompson, Zachariah B.

Born at Madrid, IA, to Norwegian immigrant parents; deafened in early infancy, but attended regular schools until age 13, transferring to the Iowa School for the deaf, graduating with honors in 1884. Attended Gallaudet College for 4 years, but left just before graduation when offered a lucrative position at the Iowa School, that of chief manager and instructor in the printing department.
