McClure, George Morris, sr.

Born in Lawrence Co., KY; deafened at age 9 by typhoid fever. Went to hearing schools, then quit to spend 3 years in a local newspaper, where he served in almost every capacity. Returned to school by entering the Kentucky School for the deaf in 1879; was so successful there that he was made a teacher before graduation, and remained in that post for 57 years; editor of the Kentucky standard. Honorary M.A. from Gallaudet College, 1896, honorary doctorate from Centre College, 1934, and another honorary doctorate from Gallaudet, 1951. Married Carrie Jasper in 1886. His grandson, William J. McClure (q.v.), also became an educator of the deaf.
