Sullivan, Charles Carroll

Born at Westernport, MD; deaf at age 1 from typhoid fever. Entered the Maryland School for the Deaf at age 5 in 1902, then transferred to the Kendall School for the Deaf in 1905. Flunked the entrance exam into Gallaudet College, thus stopping his formal education. He followed his father into the business of carving tombstones and monuments, and soon became one of the country's best stonemasons. His work is represented by carved gravestones all over the Washington DC area and by stone reliefs on the facades of several Art Deco buildings in Washington, most notably the Bulletin Building (1928). He also did some of the sculptural work on the Washington National Cathedral.
