Crough, John Edward

Born on an Ontario farm; deaf at age 3 from "worm fever". Ontario Institution for the deaf, Belleville 1888-1897, then tried printing, carpet weaving, and carpentry before going west and working in powder mills, where his sports expertise landed him on several local amateur teams. Returned to Ontario, working as a moulder, then in a brass manufacturing company, continuing to excel in amateur sports. A stint in the restaurant field was followed by enlisting in the Home Guards during World War I, 1914-1917, stationed in Toronto. Postwar, worked for a Ford automobile plant, then an aircraft factory, then a rubber company before returning to Ford until retirement in 1951.
