              Deafened in infancy and entered the New York Institution for the Deaf and Dumb (Fanwood) at age 11, finishing in 1856. After graduation, appointed a teacher at Fanwood for 3 years before returning home to Utica, NY and working at various occupations until appointment to a clerkship in the New York post office, repsonsible for money orders.
