Summary
Born as Thomas Rocco Barbella. During his boyhood days on New York City's Lower East Side, he became deaf for a while after being kicked by a horse. Attended P.S. 47, New York City's public school for the deaf, until his hearing eventually returned and he resumed attending regular school. After leaving school, he became a famous professional boxer, becoming World Middleweight Champion. After retiring from boxing, became a television comedian, appearing in The Martha Raye Show, The Henny and Rocky Show, and other programs. Elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.
