Summary
Born at Luton; deaf at 2 from brain fever. Went to London schools for the deaf at Old Kent Road and at Margate; showed aptitude for art. His parents unable to afford art schooling for him, he went into house painting and decorating instead. Also a self-taught cabinetmaker and gilder.
