Born at Birmingham, AL; deafened at age 11 by spinal meningitis. First Black deaf graduate of Gallaudet College (B.A., 1954); M.A. in 1955 from Eastern Michigan University. Founded Christian Mission for Deaf Africans, which established the first schools for deaf students in several western and central African countries; killed in a plane crash in Kenya.
