Summary
Hearing. Founded the oralist Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in 1878. In 1884 became principal of a Scranton, PA oral day school for the deaf. Then in 1891 was co-founder of another oral school, the Pennsylvania Home for the Training in Speech of Deaf Children Before They Are of School Age (also known as the Bala Home), located in Philadelphia, and served as its first superintendent as well as a teacher. Had a nervous breakdown and committed suicide by leaping from a Chicago hotel window. After her death, her sister Mary Smith Garrett (q.v.) took over as superintendent of the Bala Home.
