Summary
Born deaf in Steubenville, OH; orphaned at an early age; went to Philadelphia in 1820, where he was noticed by the president of the new Pennsylvania Insititution for the Deaf and Dumb and enrolled there, graduating 1826. Teacher at his school for one year, then became apprenticed to an engraver/lithographer. He soon became a leading lithographer; also studied art under several respected painters, including George Catlin (q.v.), and painted a few oil portraits.
