              Summary
              Born at New York City; deaf at 20 months of age from unknown causes. Briefly at the American School for the Deaf, but got most of his education from the New York Institution for the Deaf (Fanwood). Attended Gallaudet College for 1 1/2 years, but had to withdraw when his father died. Taught for 15 years at the New York School for the deaf (Fanwood), then retired after a major reorganization. About 1882, won a public foot race of 4 hours' duration in Madison Square Garden over a field of 150 competitors, covering 30 miles and winning a gold medal. In 1902, he had a job doing unspecified work in a Yonkers, NY medicine factory. Became a lay preacher and was active in Episcopal church work among the deaf. In 1883, married Isabella Leghorn.
