Dexter, Colin (Norman Colin Dexter)

Profoundly deaf since his mid-20s. A popular writer of crime novels and mysteries; his best-known character is Inspector Morse. One Inspector Morse novel features a deaf murder victim: The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn. Other Dexter novels with deaf characters include The Jewel that Was Ours, The Wench is Dead, and The Way through the Woods. Born at Stamford, England; graduated Christ's College, Cambridge University (B.A. 1953, M.A. 1958). Taught classics at various grammar schools 1954-1966; secretary for the Oxford Local Examination Board 1966-1987; full-time writer 1987- . Published his first novel in 1975. Some of his writings appear under the name of N. C. Dexter.
