              Summary
              Born at Calgary; deaf at 12 months from measles and whooping cough. Manitoba School for the Deaf 1927-1936. Moved to Vancouver, BC in 1943 and went to work for a box-making factory, learning and training in boxing at night. Won the Golden Glove welterweight championship in 1945. Struck by polio in 1952; his wife died while giving birth to their third child while he was confined to an iron lung. Released from the hospital 2 years later, but spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair, returning to his die cutting job in the box factory.
