Summary
Born deaf to deaf parents on a farm near Taylorstown, PA. Philadelphia Institution for the deaf 1869-1871, then the Ohio School for the deaf 1871-1878. Gallaudet College for 1 1/2 years, but had to withdraw because of illness. One year as a laborer on a railroad construction train, then in 1880 began working for the Carnegie Steel Co., starting as a laborer and working his way up to assistant boss heater by 1902. Married Alice P. Reading.
