Hearing; surname also sometimes spelled as de Gerando. A baron who became interested in the problems of language, leading to a study of the language problems of the deaf. He compiled and evaluated the various methods used for teaching the deaf in various countries, from the past up to his time, and published the results in an extensive two-volume De l'Education des Sourds-Muets de Naissance. Became president of the board for the Royal Insitution for Deaf-Mutes in Paris.
