              Summary
              Born at Buffalo, NY; deaf at 8 from meningitis. Attended the Le Conteulx St. Mary's Institution for the deaf, in Buffalo, for a few months; family moving to Indiana, he transferred to the Indiana Institution for the Deaf, graduating in 1881. B.A. (1886) and M.A. (1897) from Gallaudet College. Taught briefly at the Indiana Institution in 1887, then a year at the Washington State School for the Deaf. Resigned, dabbled in art for a while then decided to enter the ministry. Deacon in 1892, ordained a priest 1895. Ministered in western New York state, then became pastor of All Souls' Church for the Deaf at Philadelphia. Married Emma J. Stephens in 1891.
