Began losing hearing about age 11; high school interest in biology led to studying bacteriology at Wesleyan University, graduating there summa cum laude. Assistantship at Cornell University, completing further studies there in 1911, then went to work at the Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva, NY, for the rest of his life. Specialty was agricultural (soil) bacteriology; wrote extensively on the topic, including a bacteriology textbook and other professional reference books.
