Summary
One of the first deaf women to enter the field of engineering and probably the first to earn a doctorate in that field. Hearing loss began in childhood, becoming near total by age 24. Graduated regular high school and studied engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Became Vice President of Hospital Services at Centenary Hospital, Scarborough, Ontario at age 24, for 8 years. During that time, earned a master's in engineering. Ph.D. from the University of Toronto; visiting professor for 3 years at National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Returned to Canada about 1998 to work as a manager in the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board and also adjunct faculty member at the University of Waterloo. Ran a Web page for late-deafened people from 1996 on. Married to Miguel Aguayo. Published a book, Deafened People: Adjustment and Support (2000).
