Campbell, Agnes Cox

Deafened from heat stroke at age 5 months; home schooled and then a local oral school until age 16, when she transferred to the California School for the Deaf, Berkeley, for 3 years. Initially working in a millinery shop, she took art courses, then suspended work when she got married. Upon her husband's early death, she first supported herself by making dolls and doll clothes, then built a motel near San Francisco, which she later sold for a handsome profit. A successful poultry-raising business was also sold for a large profit, and she re-entered the motel business in Monterey, CA. This time, the business lost money and she opened a yarn shop for a while instead. Though that was successful, she longed for the motel business and so sold the yarn shop for another profit, and bought a Mariposa, CA motel at the age of 70.
