Summary
The first known American deaf person was a Native American, name unknown, mentioned in a book published in Europe in 1618, that contained a letter from the Jesuit fathers of an American mission station inquiring whether a deaf Indian could be admitted to the Catholic church. Nothing else is known of this person nor of the Church's response.
