Summary
Born in Widner, England; became hearing impaired while young from a perforated eardrum. Graduated Cambridge in 1951. Worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation, 1951-66; elected to Parliament in 1966. Further deafened from a 1968 operation. First deaf parliament member in Europe. His autobiographies are Journey into silence (1973) and Acts of defiance (1992).
