Summary
Born at Paris, France; deafened in early childhood; educated at Harrow and at Cambridge University. Inherited his father's title and properties in England at age 21. Known for his lavish entertainments, his mansion hosted Princess Victoria both before and after she became Queen. He was not involved much in politics, nor was interested in being a courtier, though he did serve briefly as Lord Chamberlain. His mansion, Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, is today a major tourist attraction. Because he never married, later generations of his family called him the "Bachelor Duke".
